How to grow Onions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The size of the onion is related to the size of its green parts above ground. The larger the green part, the larger the onion will become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latin name: Allium cepa. Alliaceae family<\/strong>
Greek name: \u039a\u03c1\u03b5\u03bc\u03cd\u03b4\u03b9 (single) \u039a\u03c1\u03b5\u03bc\u03bc\u03cd\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1 (plural)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Start onions from seeds (onion sets)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The most common and safe way to start onions is to use onion sets that you buy from plant nursery stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you want to have onions ready in the summer, you should start sowing onion sets them in March or April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you want to have onions ready in winter, you should start sowing onion sets in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Onions green part, will start to appear 10 to 14 days after sowing, depending on the soil temperature. The ideal temperature is 16 to 25 degrees Celsius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Onion sowing distances and depth<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The sowing distance of onions varies according to the variety. Onions that will grow quite a bit need longer distances. Onions that have a smaller bulb can be planted at shorter distances. A safe seeding distance is 10 to 20 cm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sowing depth of the seedbed is about one to half a centimeter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Best soil for onions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Onions prefer soil that is well fertilized and well drained. You can add compost or other fertilizer to the hole where you plant each onion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soil should be soft to help onion’s bulb grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Irrigating onions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
