{"id":13077,"date":"2021-05-07T22:37:15","date_gmt":"2021-05-07T20:37:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kalliergo.gr\/en\/?p=13077"},"modified":"2023-07-03T12:52:54","modified_gmt":"2023-07-03T10:52:54","slug":"make-paper-pots-seed-containers-old-newspapers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kalliergo.gr\/en\/garden-tools-services\/make-paper-pots-seed-containers-old-newspapers\/","title":{"rendered":"Making paper pots from old newspapers for seed containers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We usually sow the seeds to create new seedlings that we will then transplant, in special plastic seed containers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why not use old newspapers and make our own seed containers in the dimensions we want?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Newspaper pots for seed containers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We can easily create containers with paper that we can fill with soil and plant seeds in them, which will give us the seedlings that we will plant in the garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All we need is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Old newspapers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A container for the mould (e.g. a tin can or other cylindrical container)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Masking tape (paper masking tape).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Newspaper seed container construction method<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s very simple to make your own newspaper seed containers!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We fold a sheet of newspaper lengthwise so that our container has a &#8220;double&#8221; wall.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wrap a mold (tin can or other cylindrical container) around the container.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tape the sides and base with the paper tape to make a cylindrical container.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fill the container with a mixture of peat and soil.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Plant the seeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Water until they sprout and form large enough seedlings suitable for sowing in the garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advantages of the &#8216;newspaper seed pot&#8217; method<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The newspaper seedling container does not pollute the environment. It is ecological as it breaks down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plant develops a healthy and rich root system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is an economical way to make our own planting containers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can make our own planting containers in the dimensions we want. E.g. large ones for large seeds like giant beans and smaller ones for other crops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The &#8220;container&#8221; is easily removed when it is time to remove it and plant the seedling in the soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Disadvantages of the &#8216;newspaper seed pot&#8217; method<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Requires time to construct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is disposable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The classic plastic seedling containers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Commercially you will find ready-made plastic seedling containers. The ones used by nurseries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They have standard dimensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you clean them and keep them in good condition, they can be used for many years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their disadvantages are that they are not recyclable (see plastics) and they have fixed dimensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">With newspaper, make your own seedling containers out of paper<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The process is simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The materials are simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So why not make your own newspaper containers to plant seeds and make seedlings for transplanting? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Give it a try!
