We can&#8217;t offer much to our gardens or fields. However, there are some things we can do, either to protect against the cold and frost, or because it is the season to do some cultivation or planting. SOWING<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We sow in protected and heated seedbeds (in greenhouses) the early sowing of our summer vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We prepare our fields for the sowing of spring cereals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We plant garlic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We plant our deciduous fruit trees either in bare root form or with a soil ball (e.g. chestnut, apricot, apple trees, etc.).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FROST PROTECTION<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cover and protect our plants (especially the most sensitive ones, such as white onions and banana trees).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Collect fallen leaves in the plant pits for extra protection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We protect the beans that we sowed in the autumn by making a 20 cm border.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We keep trees received during frost season in a hole and cover them with matting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If it snows heavily, we shake our fruit trees so that the heavy snow falls and the branches don&#8217;t break.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">IRRIGATION<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We only water if there is a drought for several days, after strong winds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We water (if necessary) on the hottest days (e.g. alcyonide days).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PRUNING<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-2151\" title=\"\u03ba\u03bb\u03ac\u03b4\u03b5\u03bc\u03b1 \u03b4\u03ad\u03bd\u03c4\u03c1\u03c9\u03bd \u03c4\u03bf\u03bd \u0399\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kalliergo.gr\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/ergasies-kladema-jan-2019-01-09.jpg\" alt=\"\u03ba\u03bb\u03ac\u03b4\u03b5\u03bc\u03b1 \u03b4\u03ad\u03bd\u03c4\u03c1\u03c9\u03bd \u03c4\u03bf\u03bd \u0399\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kalliergo.gr\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/ergasies-kladema-jan-2019-01-09.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.kalliergo.gr\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/ergasies-kladema-jan-2019-01-09-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kalliergo.gr\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/ergasies-kladema-jan-2019-01-09-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.kalliergo.gr\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/ergasies-kladema-jan-2019-01-09-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><br><strong>Pruning in January<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We prune fruit-bearing, deciduous trees in order of priority. If possible, start from the heartwood (especially in warmer areas).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prune the vines (vines).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We prune our deciduous ornamentals, such as roses and philadelphia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Pruning on fruit trees is done for two reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To increase fruit set.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To give shape.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FERTLIZATION<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-2152\" title=\"\u03c3\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03af\u03b6\u03bf\u03c5\u03bc\u03b5 \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9 \u03c1\u03af\u03c7\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03bc\u03b5 \u03ba\u03bf\u03c0\u03c1\u03b9\u03ac\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kalliergo.gr\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/ergasies-skalisma-kopria-jan-2019-01-09.jpg\" alt=\"\u03c3\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03af\u03b6\u03bf\u03c5\u03bc\u03b5 \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9 \u03c1\u03af\u03c7\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03bc\u03b5 \u03ba\u03bf\u03c0\u03c1\u03b9\u03ac\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kalliergo.gr\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/ergasies-skalisma-kopria-jan-2019-01-09.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.kalliergo.gr\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/ergasies-skalisma-kopria-jan-2019-01-09-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kalliergo.gr\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/ergasies-skalisma-kopria-jan-2019-01-09-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><br><strong>In January we dig and apply manure<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If desired, we can enhance the autumn fertilization with repeated fertilisation or manure application.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DISEASE PREVENSION<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We spray our fruit-bearing, deciduous trees with copper and paraffinic oil to protect as much as we can the flowering and shoot buds from cold and fungal diseases that can occur after pruning. CAUTION! On pears of krystallia variety, we spray only with paraffinic oil and not with copper.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remove the weeds around the vegetable garden plants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We spray our vegetables with paraffinic oil to protect them from pest eggs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">TOOLS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We clean our tools from dried soil or dead grasses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We wash the oilseeds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We oil our pruning shears.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We polish the rusty parts of our tools and sharpen them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We check that our automatic watering system is working properly. We fix any leaks and clogged parts (e.g. injectors), check our electric valves, change batteries in our programmers, etc.).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CHRISTMAS TREES<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If we have decorated a live spruce, cypress, boxwood, arbutus, cedar or any other coniferous tree for Christmas, it&#8217;s time to take it back out into the cold because the heat of our home is taking its toll on it.
