How to grow peas

Peas is one of the vegetables that 99% of the time I had only tasted from the supermarket fridge. If you want to try fresh peas, you can grow them in the garden. It is easy. Peas prefer cold weather and loves the sun.

Other names for peas

Latin name: Pisum sativum, Fabaceae family
Greek name: Αρακάς

When to sow pea seeds

For a summer harvest, you can sow peas from the end of February until mid-April.

For autumn harvesting, you can sow peas from July until mid-August.

If you want to have a continuous harvest, be sure to sow peas every 2 weeks.

When to transplant pea plants

It is not common to transplant peas. We prefer to sow directly on the spot in the garden where it will eventually grow.

Where do we plant peas

There are low and climbing varieties of peas. If you choose a climbing variety, be aware that it will need support. You should take this into account when you choose the place to grow.

Distance between peas and sowing depth

In every position we sow 3-4 seeds at 2 centimeters depth.

Distance between sowing positions should be at least 30 centimeters.

Seeds sprout after 6 to 14 days, if the soil temperature is between 10 and 20οC.

Best soil for peas

The ideal soil for growing peas has a pH from 6.0 to 6.5.

You should water pea plants moderately. The soil should be wet but not overwatered. For plants to develop a healthy root system, you should let them discover water, by spreading their roots.

Plant peas in a spot of the garden that sun sees it all day. Peas love sun to grow.
