The reason for this post was the conversation I had with Thymios a few days ago.
A Greek who has been living in Canada for 50 years.
He told me a lot of things that haunted my mind.
Much that contradicts the image we have of other advanced countries and our “underdeveloped” Greece.
He told me, among other things, about the prices of lemons.
So I did some research and confirmed what he was telling me with Walmart prices.
USA: US$0.52 / one lemon
Canada: C$0.67 / a lemon
Greece: US$1.10 / per kilogram
I won’t forget that every couple of words he was saying:
“Greece, the most blessed country. A lifetime is not enough to know and appreciate it”.
He was comparing the people, the way of life, the joys of nature, the bonds of family, the cost of living.
He talked to me about how Americans and Canadians who came to Greece on holiday talk about it.
About the endless good things they say.
About the comparison they make with their countries.
About how Greece beats them in all areas.
To tell you the truth, it has lifted my spirits.
To appreciate the blessed place we live in called Greece.
